Event DescriptionIn the Eye of the Storm: Pipelines and the National Energy Board

Over the past few years, the National Energy Board has found itself in unfamiliar territory…on the front pages of newspapers across Canada.  And the demands on the Board seem to hit all of the major energy issues in twenty-first century Canada;

  • to lead the climate change debate,
  • to increase market access for Canada’s energy,
  • to ensure that pipelines never fail, and
  • to answer to all the voices in the debate and to remain neutral through it all.

In his presentation, Peter Watson will discuss why the NEB finds itself in the eye of the storm and what the Board is doing about it.

Bio of Peter Watson, Chair and CEO of the National Energy Board:
Mr. Watson has extensive senior executive leadership experience in energy, natural resources and environmental issues. In his most recent position as Deputy Minister of the Alberta Executive Council, he was responsible for the administration of Executive Council, Cabinet and committees, and was also Head of the Public Service.  Prior to this appointment, he served as Deputy Minister, Energy (2008–2011), Deputy Minister, Environment (2005–2008), and Assistant Deputy Minister, Environment (2002–2005). In 2011, he was named Alberta’s Resource Person of the Year by the Alberta Chamber of Resources. Mr. Watson holds a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta.
