A Fredericton teen was recognized Saturday night for women’s rights activism in New Brunswick.

Sorcha Beirne, 17, received the YMCA Peace Medallion.

Beirne has founded the group the Fredericton Youth Feminists and is involved in Reproductive Justice New Brunswick.

She’s helped organize protests, rallies and fundraisers for feminist issues, including fighting the closure of the province’s only Morgantaler clinic.

Beirne says it’s nice to have her worked recognized, even though not everyone may agree with it.

“That’s not just nice for me, but for everybody who’s involved in these issues. Especially as a young person, it’s really nice to be recognized as a lot of young people aren’t. A lot of young people aren’t recognized in the same way that maybe adults are or they are not taken as seriously. So yeah, it’s really important,” said Beirne.

Hi Shaun: Great seeing you yesterday. I wonder, have you posted this Google Earth video tour of frack sites in the US? It is by far the most horrifying demonstration of this practice and the devastation it wreaks on the landscape that I have seen. You should watch it.

I continue to post it on Twitter and just did so in response to a tweet that the MLA Brian MacDonald (Fton-Hanwell) wrote thanking Sen. John McCain (of all people) and some other guy for their helpful guidance and dialogue on the wonders of fracking. Have a look, you’ll weep. This is already a year old, or more, and no doubt there are many thousands more acres irreversibly damaged.

No wonder the climate is changing–with each of these wells leaking methane to the atmosphere there’s no hope.

Have a great day! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jN6TSSPZwU
